The library of the Institute
“The IMEW is the best, focused collection of international research and scholarship on the ethics of medicine, illness, disability that I have seen. This admirably accessible library spans the social sciences, humanities, and ethics of science. The particularly strong collection on disability studies, which covers German, UK, and US scholarship and research, is more comprehensive than any I have visited. It is especially good on issues of gender and women. The wide collection of journals and the publications of IMEW strengthen and complete the library. This library is a valuable resource for every ethicist or student of medical history, the politics and culture of health, biopolitics, or disability — as well as the general public.”
Rosemarie Garland-Thomson
The “Institut Mensch, Ethik und Wissenschaft” lays out a centre for scientific documentation enclosing a reference library since 2002.
Our specific profile:
- We consider the perspective of disabled people and people who are chronically ill as well as the relevant social groups.
- Our focus is interdisciplinary with a main point on the Social Sciences and their links to other sciences.
German- and English-speaking literature dealing with modern medicine, medicine ethics and bioethics are gathered and made accessible by the institute:
- Monographs and anthology
- Reference books
- Magazines
- Grey literature, for example reports of research and symposiums etc.
- Scientific essays and media articles
- Statements, position papers and guidelines
Most works of the collection are books giving an overview and interpretations of the interdisciplinary research in Disability Studies.
The whole stock is stored bibliographical in the IMEW- literature database and can be searched at the institute.
